May 2018 News

May was one of the craziest months if not the craziest for team New Era! The Kanata location is mere days away from fully opening and the preparation and wait is almost over! This place is next level nice! 329 March Road right near the “Kanata Research Park” for those of you who haven’t heard is the place to be if you are in the Kanata area. To go along with our busy month preparing a 5,000+ square foot facility for Ottawa’s best workout, our members had their plates full as well. Let’s get into it!

MAY 4: TKO 43 in Quebec City was the sight for Mateo “Carrapato” Vogel’s second professional win inside the octagon. Moving up a weight class and withstanding a tough first round, Mateo walked out with his hands raised winning via the rear naked choke in round #2. If you haven’t gotten a chance to congratulate Mateo, please do so.

MAY 12: IFMA World Championships (International Federation of Amateur Muay Thai) took place in Mexico earlier in May with Taylor McClatchie representing Ottawa, Canada, and New Era. Unfortunately, Taylor lost her 2nd bout to the eventual bronze medalist from Belarus. Cole MacInnis was also scheduled to compete, but unfortunately there were not enough competitors in the junior division. Congratulations to both amazing athletes no matter the situation or result.

MAY 12: On the BJJ side of things, many of our students competed in one of the biggest tournaments in Canada, the Ontario Open, in Toronto on May 12th & 13th. We had lots of podium finishes including 5 bronzes, 3 silvers, and 3 golds! Highlighting the list of podium finishers are the Geauvreau brothers; Jake & Gauge who both took home gold in their respective divisions, and 2 of our New Era instructors; Matthew McKay who won gold in the purple belt division & Professor Peter Fazekas who won silver in the Master brown/black belt division. Congratulations to all who participated and represented the gym like champs!

JUNE 16: Lots of upcoming events in the Ottawa Muay Thai scene for June. June 16th is another Heroes Combat League event at Sala San Marco which features multiple New Era competitors.

JUNE 22: Wreck Thai Boxing is Friday June 22nd at St. Anthony’s Banquet Hall and also features a handful of our local talent. Please attend if you can. Tickets for both events will be for sale at the front desk shortly. The Canadian National BJJ Competition is also in June on the 22nd! Talk to Peter & register before it is too late.

If you haven’t heard already, Robert Thomas & Matthew McKay are joining our team of instructors to help better service two locations. Our full team of instructors now consist of; Kru Jeff, Robert Thomas, Dave MacDonald, Professor Peter Fazekas, Mateo Vogel, Matthew McKay, Jason Motard, Kristy Balcom, and Kolby Brindle. Please welcome in Robert & Matthew if you have not already. With the opening of a second location, it was our number one priority for the level of instruction to not “thin out” whatsoever. With the addition of these two world-class instructors, as well as having Mateo, Dave, and Jason take on a bigger role, we feel like our level of instruction has only gotten better. If you have already been to the Kanata location then you can attest to how nice it is, and if you have not, we will hopefully be releasing some news shortly about open gym and class times.
Keep an eye out for private lesson specials with all of our trainers this June.
There has been a ton of new faces everyday in the gym and it is a great sight. With the expansion into Kanata it is only going to keep growing. Please support the second location and tell your friends in the Kanata area about us!

Marcel Nguyen

Marcel Nguyen

The member of the month for May is Marcel Nguyen. Marcel joined New Era in April for our 10-week fight camp and has been one of the most dedicated students we have ever had to date. He has rarely missed a day of training and stays for at least 2-3 classes a day. He has progressed so much to the point that he participates against our high level athletes in sparring on a regular basis. Marcel has spoken very highly of the gym and it does not go unnoticed! Thank you and congratulations Marcel!

“Less talk, more training.”

“In Jiu Jitsu, everybody follows their own path. Everybody has different struggles. For one person, it could take 10 years to become a black belt. For others, it could take 15. Focus on yourself. Don’t compare yourself to others.”
